Lovers of taste and decorum will of course be aware that this year’s Eurovision Song Contest was won by Conchita Wurst. Whilst her success was no doubt largely due to musicality and creative artistry, it may have caught some people’s attention that she sports a beard. I wonder if this had anything to do with her success? Recent research suggests it might.
It turns out that both men and women prefer beards to the clean shaven look. Heavy beards aren’t as attractive as stubble, and the preference was stronger amongst women.
Conchita was probably not getting the full benefit. Her beard was not exactly heavy but was clearly a bit more developed than simple stubble. She is also of course a cross dresser. What exactly this does to attractiveness is anybody’s guess because as far as I can tell nobody has studied it. But there is research that indicates that being an one out in the crowd makes one more attractive. I think Conchita has that one nailed.
