Fabric Facial Masks

Facial masks have been around for ages, and are popular enough to get stocked in supermarkets in the UK.  But they are still exotic enough that you can’t assume people know what they are.  The idea of putting a clothe soaked with a fluid on your face and leaving it there for about 20 minutes still seems to be something of a minority taste.  Part of the problem is that people aren’t exactly sure what it is that they are supposed to do.  And judging by the way some of the products in the category are marketed, it doesn’t look like the makers have a much better idea. Colin Solves Your Problems 23 – Does Chlorine in Swimming Pool Water Affect the Skin?

Can the chlorine in swimming pool water affect the skin

An interesting question from SuZan who is  a keen swimmer.

Hello Colin- I’m a v keen and impressive swimmer- but I’m worried about the effect of chlorine on my skin- the stuff disintegrates my cossies slowly but surely and gnaws away at my goggles so whatthe heckythump is it doing to my peau ? I would love your opinion on a skin barrier product called GLOVES IN A BOTTLE. I’ve been through 4 bottles of this (I apply b4 swim).. but looked at the ingred including :Isopropyl Myristate ,Dimethicone,Triethanolamine,Hypromellose,VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Steareth-21 , marmite ( put that 1 in to see if u’re still reading !) ,Phenoxyethanol. (I have looked some of these up and seen some scareymongering (?).. I suppose all I’m asking is could this stuff stop the chlorine penetrating/dryin out my skin… or am I just spreading pricey chemicals on pointlessly? *Their website has an impressive vid showing ‘G in a bot’ repelling acid ! Much obliged and x for any info.

Well that is an interesting question, or rather two questions.  (Or three if you count did I notice the Marmite reference.)   First of all, does the chlorine in swimming pool water affect your skin? Continue reading

Colin Solves Your Problems 22 – Does Everyone Need a Skin Care Regime?

Skin care regime

Do you need a skin care regime?

A question from Yasmin in Sweden

Hello Colin! Recently been trying to wrap my head around the science of skin care. It all started with a free sample from clinque’s ‘3 step skin care’. I love it and it feels great. However I’m always suspicous to whether these things are actually having an affect and if it’s something that is necessary? So in essence my question is really, does everyone need a skin care regime? Do we need to be cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising? What about eye creams? Do we just need a classic bar of soap and sunscreen if anything at all? It’s so frustrating, I just want to know the truth 🙂 Thanks! Kind regards from Yasmine in Stockholm, Sweden

What you need to know about glycerin, propylene glycol, hyaluronic acid and other humectants

Sadly you can’t moisturise your skin just be getting it wet.

If you put a raisin in a glass of water and leave it for a few hours it will swell up. The concentrated contents of the raisin, full of sugar and other small water soluble molecules pulls water in across the skin of the raisin. Continue reading
