Colin Solves Your Problems 13: Hyaluronic Acid

Lossa writes:

Is hyaluronic acid really as good as it is being made out to be or is it just hype. Can the molecule penetrate into the skin or is it like collagen and too big to get in.

The hyaluronic acid used in cosmetics has been hydrolysed so the molecule has been split up into small chunks that have a chance to get into the skin. It does seem to have a moisturising effect but I am not sure that there is any particularly good reason to chose it over other less glamorous and frankly much cheaper alternatives.

There is a lot more detail about hyaluronic acid and other humectants here.

  1. Hi. I use a product from HomeHealth which is simply labelled ‘Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising Cream.’ I think it works well, a lot better for me than Clinique’s DDM lotion which is about double the price.

Looking at the list of ingredients, soybean oil, grapeseed oil and glycerin are quite high, whereas sodium hyaluronate is 3rd from the bottom. I assume this is the hyaluronic acid component. I’m not complaining as I mentioned above I like this cream and am on my 4th container, but could it equally have been called ‘Soybean Cream’ seeing as there’s more soya oil than hyaluronic acid?
