Hydrogenated polyisobutene in lip balms

I get quite a few e-mails asking me specific questions, but this one from Michelle caught my eye.

‘Colin, good day. I was searching for some information on lip balms and lip colors and I came across your article titled Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter Update. After reading it, I had to go and read the original article, which in turn prompted me to read more of your other articles on other subjects. I have to say I was impressed with your articles.

The writing on Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter Update prompted my question I had about hydrogenated polyisobutene in cosmetics. I needed to look this up because I just purchased some lip color yesterday from Bare Escentuals’ Buxum lib color. The first ingredient on the list is hydrogenated polyisobutene. Is this a bad thing? I know I am not eating it with a spoon, but it will go on my lips. Eventually it will get into my system by me either licking my lips or “eating” it off my lips. How harmful is hydrogenated polyisobutene?

Thank you for your input.
